Bay Of IslandsThe Bay of Islands is well renowned for its large range of water activities, strong cultural and historical background, and its moderate subtropical climate.

The Paihia Pacific Resort Hotel is a short stroll from the glorious sun-drenched shores of the sparkling ocean. Just minutes from game-fishing experiences that are world famous, and only a short drive from one of the finest golf courses in the southern hemisphere.

We will happily arrange tours through this area steeped in history and Maori culture. Courtesy transport is also available to most of the local attractions. Activities range from launch cruises to horse riding, specialty barbecues on isolated beach, windsurfing, yachting, diving, light tackle fishing and more.

The Paihia Pacific Resort is the perfect base from which to explore further north. See the magnificent Kauri Forests, Cape Reinga the top of New Zealand , 90 mile Beach, a Maori Marae and the craft shops of Kerikeri.

Big Game Fishing - Te Ariki Nui

Te Ariki Nui was built for deep-sea fishing charters and is ideally suited for Marlin fishing and other big game fishing

Big Game Fishing

We cater for anglers wishing to fish for just a single day or anything up to a 10-day extended live-aboard voyage. Trips to the Three Kings Islands or the west coast of New Zealand's North Island would require a minimum of five days. Each charter is tailor-made for you. Just tell us how long you would like your trip to be and your target species.

Bay of Islands
We will fish single days from the Bay of Islands, but would recommend at least two.

Saltwater fly-fishing
We cater for saltwater fly-fisherman targeting kahawai, trevally, kingfish, and mako sharks for the more adventurous

Dolphin Discovery is a modern high-speed catamaran designed for close up marine manual viewing.  It is purpose built for passenger comfort and is perfect for dolphin and whale watching in the Bay.

Explore NZ - Swim with Dolphins

The perfect opportunity for you to get up close and personal with these beautiful marine mammals. Cruise amongst the 144 islands and see dolphins in their natural environment.  Once dolphins have been encountered the experienced crew will tell you all about these wonderful creatures and their habits. The crew will assess the behavior of the dolphins on the day and decide whether swimming with the dolphins will be possible (DOC regulations).

You will then be given an option to join the dolphins in the water and swim with them. You will be supplied with snorkels, masks, fins and wetsuits.

Only pay for the cruise if you don’t swim.  A portion of your fare contributes to marine mammal research and conservation.

The Dolphin Discoveries cruises take you to Otehei Bay for an exclusive Island stop.   

Explore the island’s stunning beaches by foot or by kayak. Those willing to invest a little effort will be rewarded by deserted beaches and crystal clear waters. Visit Maori Pa sites, where defensive strongholds and food storage pits can still be seen today. Explore NZ - The Ulitimate Day's Sailing in the Bay - 'On the Edge'

An opportunity to experience the exhilarating ride aboard the impressive high performance catamaran, sailing the Bay of Islands.  Built as a high performance flyer, ‘On the Edge’ is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots. 72ft long, 40 ft wide and a mast that stands over 100ft high.
At lunchtime the catamaran anchors at one of the many idyllic islands where a traditional kiwi barbeque is provided.  You can go ashore and participate in some great island activities, swimming, snorkeling, nature walks, or simply kick back and enjoy the relaxed pace and island atmosphere.

This is where New Zealand's modern history began. Arrive at the Visitor Centre for a background on the events of 1840 and browse in the very special souvenir shop - quality and value. Take time to walk the grounds - first stop, the magnificent Maori War Canoe, Ngatokimatawhaorua. Stroll up to the award-winning display in the superb Maori Meeting House and absorb the heart of our history in the Treaty House itself.

Parklike grounds, native birdsong, wonderful Bay views and space to move! Come and capture your own views of this important historical site, walk the mangroves and see the waterfall. It's all on the Waitangi National Reserve.

Culture North - The story of New Zealand and the Treaty of Waitangi

Culture North Production is an evening show at the Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands Culture North combines Maori culture, live drama, sound and lights. This evening show covers the story of the arrival of Kupe, the first Maori chief to discover New Zealand, through to present day. You will enjoy history unfolding with the meeting of the two cultures and the signing of New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi

The 1100 year old story comes alive as a grand parent speaks to his grandchild. Impressive lighting and sound effects accompany the tale, adding a mysterious air to the evening performance. Stunning drama and vibrant Maori culture bring the story alive as visions of the past.

Bay of Islands Diving - Paihia Dive

The Cavalli Islands - The Rainbow Warrior
Explore the historical and controversial Greenpeace flagship, the Rainbow Warrior. Bombed in Auckland Harbour by French Secret Service agents on July 10th 1985, this artificial reef has matured into extraordinary divesite. The wreck is covered with unique jewel anemones in a variety of hues of red, yellow, blue, purple and orange. It is the home to a myriad of fish including Golden Snapper, Kingfish, John Dory, Leather Jackets, Wrasse and Bigeye. Don't miss the opportunity to dive on one of the world's famous wrecks.

The Canterbury -The Bay of Islands

Light Tackle fishing - "Earl Grey"

The Earl Grey is a custom designed 6 metre sportfishing vessel operating under New Zealand Safe Ship Management policy (M.S.A No. 121970) and carries all required safety equipment along with fish/depth sounder, G.P.S satellite and V.H.S. radio.

We offer action fishing amidst the beautiful Bay of Islands, historic fishing grounds of legendary Zane Grey. Your skipper, Steve Butler, has gained a considerable reputation for his expertise in charter fishing over the years and can offer a wide range of fishing including ultra light tackle and fly fishing. Livebaiting for Yellowtail Kingfish is one of Steve's specialties. Pound for pound these fish have to be one of the greatest fighting fish in the world. Kahawai, New Zealand's Trout of the Sea, is another speedster offering a great challenge to light tackle and fly fishermen alike. Snapper, John Dory, Hapuka (Groper), Trevally and Shark are other species on offer at various times of the year.

Sea Kayaking

Come & explore the Bay of Islands with us! Paddle through tranquil waters, snorkel and swim in secluded bays and relax on unspoilt beaches. Discover an area which is rich in Maori and European history and abundant in Marine and Birdlife. There is the opportunity to explore the unique mangroves and always the chance of seeing friendly dolphins.

We provide all Kayaking equipment, snorkelling gear and complimentary morning or afternoon tea. You don't need any experience, our qualified guides will give you full instructions and assistance.

Great Sights - Cape Reinaga

A Cape Reinga tour for those who wish to spend time enjoying the magnificent natural wonders of the North. You will be over-awed by the grandeur of the mighty Kauri trees, the expanse of Ninety Mile Beach and the mystique of Cape Reinga.

There are numerous stops for you to take in the scenic highlights and activities. They start with the easy twenty minute boardwalk through the Puketi Kauri Forest. Thunder along Ninety Mile Beach to the top of New Zealand and wander out to the lighthouse. Ride the sand sledges if you dare! Take a swim, dig for shellfish and taste the local fruits of Kerikeri. Visit the picturesque village of Mangonui.

Your Coach Captain's local knowledge and informative commentary will make this trip one to remember. It is a day full of activity and yours to enjoy. This tour is available with or without lunch.

R. Tucker Thompson

Step back in time onboard the unique tall ship ‘R. Tucker Thompson’, built by local northlanders in the traditional 18th century working ship. You sail day is as interactive as you choose – help set sails or sit back and relax.  Enjoy Devonshire tea while sailing across the sheltered waters of the Bay.  At lunchtime the vessel anchors in a secluded bay – step ashore or take a swim while your crew prepares your lunch.

Mack Attack fast boat adventure

Feel the adrenalin as the power of two 800hp engines race you through the Islands of the Bay and out to the open sea.  Breathtaking scenery is enhanced with the skipper’s commentary.   Hold your breath as the skipper navigates through the narrow space and admire the rock walls that soar above you.

Adrenalin junkies will love the extreme seats at the front of the Mack Attack – but beware these are not for the faint hearted!

Salt Air

Fly to Cape Reinga
Enjoy an unforgettable experience with the Cape Reinga and Northlands half day tour.  Fly up the West Coast, via the famous 90 mile beach, landing in the Cape Reinga area within the hour.  Enjoy a guided vehicle tour exploring the top of New Zealand.  Return flight via the East Coast, where much of this spectacular coastline in not accessible by road.
The flight is approximately 2 hours long in our Cessna aircraft, with a break in the middle for the 4x4 tour (which takes between 2.5 and 3 hours). Total time is approx 4.5 - 5 hours.

Scenic Helicopter Flights
Enjoy scenic flights over the beautiful Bay of Islands.  Fly over the crystal clear waters to the Hole in the Rock for a 20 minute flight.  Alternatively take a 30 minute flight to explore the unique coastline surrounding the Bay of Island region.  Fly over the Purerua Peninsular, Takou Bay, Tapuaetahi, Matauri Bay and the Cavalli Islands.
Helicopter half day tours with lunch to a remote beach, Kingfisher lodge or Waipoua Forest are also available.
