At The Paihia Pacific Resort Hotel we are committed to the implementation of proactive measures to help protect and sustain the environment for future generations.
We understand the impact of our operations on the environment and aim to minimise any detrimental affects that may occur.
We therefore undertake to:
- Ensure that all our staff are instructed on the potential environmental effects of their activities and the benefits of improved environment performance.
- Make our guests aware of our environmental commitment and how they can be involved.
- Adopt a policy of ‘green procurement’, taking environmental factors into account in all purchasing and supplier contracts.
- Ensure that our environmental efforts are continuously reviewed, updated and communicated to all staff.
We actively carry out the following everyday actions:
Reducing our demand on energy by:
- Offering a towel and linen change agreement to encourage guests to help the environment by reducing energy and water use.
- Buying local products, where possible, to reduce transport emissions.
- Installing low energy light bulbs, in accordance with a renew and replace scheme.
- Ensuring our staff are fully trained in power conservation and make sure all appliances are turned off when not in use.
- Installing timers on lights and sensors on night lights.
- Installing timers on kitchen appliances, swimming pool and spa equipment.
- Controlling power usage to use at low demand periods.
We reduce the amount of waste by:
- Separating waste for recycling, including plastics, glass, paper and cooking oil.
- Offering recycling facilities to our guests by providing recycling bins in each room and having recycling banks throughout the facility.
- Buying from suppliers who offer environmentally-friendly and recycling packaging, where possible.
- Ensuring we do not purchase products with excessive packaging.

- Regulating garden watering by use of sensible planting practice and irrigation system.
- Ensuring all staff members are fully trained in water conservation and actively minimise the amount of water wastage.
We support conservation activities and the regeneration of renewable forests by:
- Ensuring all printed material and products are sustainably sourced, where possible.
- Planting trees and shrubs native to this area in order to encourage bird life and reduce the need for irrigation.
- Purchasing locally, which helps reduce carbon emissions from transport.
- Supporting Project Island Song, bring native birds back to the Bay of Islands (sponsored by Explore NZ).
We understand we are part of our local community and participate in it by:
- Supporting and sponsoring a range of local initiatives and fund raising events.
- Co-operating and interacting with our local community by being active member with ‘Focus Paihia’ an organisation that considers the direction of Paihia over the next 20 years, including environmental implications.
- Training our staff to commit to our environmental practices.
We aim to reduce the amount of pollution by:
- Using only biodegradable or non-toxic cleaning products.
